NMM 2097 - Skedsmo (Grove Knudsen)
NMM 2097 Skedsmo (Grove Knudsen) is a giant, over 0.5 mm across, and a rare beauty. It is a bluish-grey cryptocrystalline (CC) droplet with stunning crystallisations. A shiny sulphide rim surrounds the large metal bead at the front, indicating a short terrestrial age, as sulphide dissolves quickly during weathering.
The most striking feature, however, is the unusual glassy tail, brown from traces of Fe3+, with a black cap at the end. What caused this? I am unsure, but I suspect it is related to NMM 2583, another CC with a long brown glass tail, formed as a twin during rapid spin in atmospheric entry. In any case, NMM 2097 is a unique micrometeorite and a prized addition to any collection.
