This is a duo displaying the fascinating variety of porphyritic olivine (PO) micrometeorites.
NMM 2546 / NMM 2716
NMM 2716 is a large ~3.5 mm colourless to amber coloured stone with two small nickel-iron beads and a couple of open gas vesicles, edges jagged with water-clear olivine (forsterite) crystals. Some of the large crystals have iridescent Newton rings on top.
NMM 2546, on the other hand, is a jet black “crystal bowl” made up by huge pyramidal olivine (forsterite) crystals in glass. On the electron microscope (SEM) images, we can see that the smooth inside of the “bowl” is sprinkled with magnetite “Christmas tree” crystals. Together, this is a museum-quality combo!
PROVENANCE: The catalogue number refers to the NMM archive, the index of Jon Larsen’s Project Stardust collection, which is the reference collection for urban micrometeorites. The stone was found, curated, and selected by Larsen. It is in pristine condition, fresh from Space. VERIFICATION: The MM has been confirmed extraterrestrial by visual identification and/or SEM/EDS analysis by Jon Larsen. The stone is mounted on a durable aluminium/glass/cardboard microslide and is delivered together with a signed Certificate of Authenticity and four photo files. This micrometeorite is a unique museum-quality specimen and a jewel in any collection.
