  • NMM 2583 Nesodden is one of the most iconic micrometeorites in the world. It has appeared in newspapers, magazines, films (including Werner Herzog), and space art exhibitions in New York and Berlin. I have written several articles about its formation process, and the poster photo remains my best-selling item in the shop. Still, this fantastic space rock looks even more striking in person. This micrometeorite is so remarkable that it is nearly impossible to give a brief description. It is a large (~700µm long) cryptocrystalline (CC) droplet with an exceptional brownish glass tail. Along the tail, there are several umbrella-shaped olivine crystals. The crystalline, thick end features a small nickel-iron bead, and on the backside, two open vesicles caused by escaping volatiles can be seen. In the famous photo, where one single fibre of light backlights the stone, we observe a unique formation of individual olivine crystals inside the translucent glass just in front of the crystalline border. This stone is truly one of a kind and offers a historic opportunity for a fortunate collector.

PROVENANCE: The catalogue number refers to the NMM archive, the index of Jon Larsen’s Project Stardust collection, which is the reference collection for urban micrometeorites. The stone was found, curated, and selected by Larsen. It is in pristine condition, fresh from Space. VERIFICATION: The MM has been confirmed extraterrestrial by visual identification and/or SEM/EDS analysis by Jon Larsen. The stone is mounted on a durable aluminium/glass/cardboard microslide and is delivered together with a signed Certificate of Authenticity and four photo files. This micrometeorite is a unique museum-quality specimen and a jewel in any collection.
