  • NMM 2818 Kjellstad is a striking micrometeorite that will be featured in the upcoming textbook. It is a black, shiny V-type (glass) with a cryptocrystalline region at the front. The notable feature is the weathering of the glass, which has created deep, reflective pits, while the more resistant crystalline area remains completely intact.

The turtleback-like region at the front, covering about one-third of the stone, displays several iridescent oxidations. At first glance, it seems as if there is a clear boundary between the crystalline and glassy areas, but closer inspection (see the black/white SEM images) reveals an astonishing phenomenon: in front of the crystalline boundary lies a zone filled with countless small olivine crystals. Indeed, a rare sight!

PROVENANCE: The catalogue number corresponds with the NMM archive, which catalogues Jon Larsen’s Project Stardust collection and acts as the reference for urban micrometeorites. The stone originates from Jon Larsen’s private collection; it was discovered, curated, and chosen for Treasures from Space by Larsen. It remains in excellent condition. VERIFICATION: The MM has been verified as extraterrestrial through visual inspection and/or SEM/EDS analysis by Jon Larsen. The stone is mounted on a durable aluminium, glass, or cardboard microslide and comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity and photographic records. This micrometeorite is a museum-quality specimen.
